What
is global education?
Global education is about teaching global issues and development
issues. It is also about encouraging concern and action
for global issues. It is especially important for young
people, because they will be shaping future society.
Yvonne Hampton is a
special needs teacher. As a supply teacher she has worked
in both mainstream and special schools with PLMD (Profound
Learning and Multiple Disabled Person) pupils.
What
is global education?
Wherever possible the teacher is relating the curriculum
to other countries, peoples, backgrounds and cultures. This
means pupils are learning about the diversity of life and
cultures. At some level pupils can learn about development
issues which affect people's lives directly or indirectly.
Peter D'Sena is lecturer
in History and Education at Leeds Metropolitan University.
What
is global education?
It is primarily an opportunity to enrich people's minds,
by allowing them to give critical consideration to the issues,
problems and ideas of others; and that can be of 'others'
from the other side of the globe or the other side of the
street.
